Prior to WWII the Japanese soldiers had been model soldiers. When they helped put down the Boxer Rebellion they were better behaved than soldiers from the West. In the Sino-Russian war of 1904–05 they were very compassionate to the POW’s as well as citizens of Russia.
In the Battle of Manila they knew they were going to die and following the Bushido creed wanted to take as many of the other side with them. While it is no justification, it is an explanation.
But Nanking is not in that category. They were winning. In one generation the Japanese army had transformed from honorable to horrific. Many of the changes were similar to what occurred in Germany. The Japanese thought they were the superior race. They believed they were destined to rule in the East. They believed the Chinese were subhuman.
But in the army itself they would beat and torture their own, especially new recruits. If you were a soldier and had been beaten and tortured by your own army, they felt it was expected of you to beat, torture and kill the opposing side.
A self destructive mentality took over the Japanese Military forces which altered their ability to think clearly and in large part contributed to their defeat.
